Jay Cumbie has been Aspyra’s Product Manager since 2013. With over 3 decades of experience, Jay has made a tremendous impact on the team, ensuring seamless operations. We sat down with Jay to talk about his experiences before and during his time with our team. 

Could You Tell us a Little About Your Background?

I graduated from St. Luke’s School of Radiologic Technology in 1984. Following a 6-year timeframe of leading a small X-ray department, I became a Magnetic Resonance (MR) Technologist. Then, at a different company, I was elevated to the role of Applications Specialist. I traveled the country helping technologists get the best images from scanners, troubleshooting problems and helping them stay on top of the advancing technology.  

When I left that company, I was in charge of two MRI centers in Jacksonville for many years. I left that position to travel around the U.S. in an RV with my family. I traveled as a temporary MR Technologist to sites where someone would be out for an extended time, such as pregnancies or surgeries. This led to my contract being converted to full-time. During my 6 years at Philips Medical in Foster City, CA I became the subject matter expert on hospital and medical imaging workflow. Eventually, my family found our way back to Florida where I found Aspyra. 

What Does Your Role at Aspyra Entail?

I am the liaison between the end user and the development team. I bring ideas that will help our customers with the day-to-day operation of the imaging workflow. I also test new features, support our customers, and train all of the PACS customers in how to use our software. I have always been interested in computer technology and this was my chance to help many people at one time. 

In Your Experience, How Have PACS Grown? 

When I started in radiology, there were light boxes, upon which X-ray images were hung. If an image was over- or under-exposed, it would have to be re-taken exposing patients to more radiation. With PACS, there is wide latitude for over- or under-exposed images. So, less radiation to patients.  

What is Your Favorite Part of the Job?  

Being able to work with people from all over the world and making a positive difference for other Technologists, Radiologists, and patients. I enjoy working with the Aspyra team and giving our customers a better product with each release.  

How Would You Describe Aspyra’s Culture?  

 We all work very hard, and everyone relies on the one who has the most knowledge about a specific area or product. We are a family. 

What Do You Like to Do in Your Free Time? 

I enjoy comedy, music, craft beer, and Walt Disney World. We are annual pass holders and try to make the trip at least once a month, if not more! 

What’s a Fun Fact about Yourself?

I was a DJ for 20 years in tandem with my MRI career. I worked in nightclubs, internet radio, and commercial radio. My local radio show was called the Prehistoric Planet. I was on the air for just over 6 years. I retired from music in 2004 when my youngest was born.
