COVID-19 and Remote Access Options
COVID-19 is a main concern right now, but it isn’t the first epidemic / pandemic we’ve faced and it won’t be the last. In the years between 1900 and 2000, there were 44 epidemics or pandemics and the HIV / AIDS pandemic continues today. Since 2000, there have been 72 epidemics or pandemics with 10 still active. Those include COVID-19, Ebola, Cholera, Lassa Fever, Dengue Fever, Mers-CoV (another coronavirus) and Measles.
History has shown us that our three biggest assets in fighting diseases are People, Knowledge, and Technology – but these three must all work together. We must use the knowledge we gain to create quicker diagnoses, improve and deliver treatments, and avoid risky behaviors. Technology can help us develop diagnostic tests, treatments, methods for remote access, telehealth, on-line ordering and contactless delivery, along with communications. People need to use the technologies and knowledge available to help contain and control the disease. Most people know what options are available from the stores and eateries that they typically use. Do you know what options your medical providers have available for telehealth, viewing your medical records, and viewing your medical images? ASPYRA has a Guest Portal in the PACS for patient and referring physician access as well as a web portal in the LIS for physician access. Your facility’s systems may have similar capabilities.
